When leaders are well, associations thrive.
Association executives are often expected to lead with clarity, composure and strategic vision, even under immense pressure. Yet, the demands of leadership can come at a steep cost to personal health, both mental and physical.
The Wellbeing Initiative is a space dedicated to changing that.
Our mission is to support the long-term health and sustainability of association leadership by normalizing and prioritizing executive wellbeing. Through research, conversation and community, we’re reframing what it means to lead well: Not just with strength, but with intention, balance and care.
We’re exploring the real-life experiences of association leaders, sharing practical tools for conversations about wellbeing in all association spaces, and offering space for connection, reflection and growth. Whether it’s preventing burnout, building supportive cultures, or simply learning to breathe again, the Wellbeing Initiative aims to make health a leadership competency, not an afterthought.

Board of Directors
While leadership training often includes topics like strategic planning, financial oversight and governance, it rarely addresses the mental and emotional stamina required to lead through uncertainty and transformation.
Boards play a critical role in setting expectations around executive wellness. The cultural signals board members send about availability, performance, vulnerability, and self-care either reinforce or dismantle harmful leadership norms.
Download the ready-to-go discussion guide to encourage board members and leadership development facilitators to recognize and proactively support the mental, physical and emotional well-being of executives (CEOs/EDs), recognizing this as a core component of effective, sustainable leadership.
